How to Operate the Infusion Pump Correctly?
common faults and troubleshooting methods of infusion pumps
The infusion pump is an instrument that can accurately control the number of infusion drops or the infusion flow rate, and ensure that the drug can be uniformly speeded, and the amount of drug can be accurately and safely entered into the patient's body to play a role.

At the same time, the infusion pump can also improve the efficiency and flexibility of clinical drug delivery operations and reduce the workload of nursing care. Through the following correct operation of the infusion pump, we can maintain the safety of using the infusion pump.

Steps of operation

1. Prepare the liquid medicine in the treatment room according to the doctor's order, and check the quality of the liquid medicine, whether there is any deterioration, discoloration, and turbidity, whether the bottle mouth is loose, and the validity period is correct.

Sterilize with cotton swabs, aspirate the liquid, add the medicine according to the principle of aseptic operation and mix well. Indicate the name, bed number, name of the added medicine, and dosage on the bottle label. Please check by the second person.

2. Check the validity date of the infusion pump tube and whether the outer packaging is tight. Open the outer packaging and close the regulator after passing the test. Sterilize the mouth of the bottle with a cotton swab, and insert the needle of the infusion pump tube into the infusion bottle vertically.

3. Bring the infusion pump, infusion supplies, and treatment tray to the bedside of the patient, and check the bed number and name. Explain the purpose of the infusion, the purpose of the infusion pump, and the precautions to the conscious patient in order to obtain cooperation. Place the infusion pump in a suitable position and connect it to the power source, and hang the solution bottle upside down on the infusion stand.

Squeeze the dropper to make the solution flow quickly to 1/3-1/2 full, raise the infusion tube at the lower end of the dropper, loosen the regulator slightly, hold the needle plug and slowly lower the infusion tube, see a small amount of liquid flowing into the small medicine cup so that the gas in the infusion pump tube is driven out at one time.

4. Turn on the power switch and correctly install the hose part of the infusion pump tube into the infusion pump.

5. Close the regulator, check again whether there is any residual gas in the infusion pump tube, and assist the patient to adopt a comfortable lying position.

6. Adjust the infusion speed and the predetermined infusion volume according to the doctor's advice (press the ‘select’ on the infusion pump panel to adjust).

7. Fasten the tourniquet, select the blood vessel correctly, loosen the tourniquet, and disinfect the skin with a cotton swab. Prepare the infusion patch, fasten the tourniquet, disinfect the skin again with the cotton swab, perform puncture, and fix it correctly (same infusion procedure).

8. Record the medicine, liquid volume, and infusion speed in the infusion pump.

Precautions

(1)  Record in detail the start time, the total amount of infusion, infusion speed, type of liquid input, drug name, and dosage of the infusion pump. Check frequently during use, pay attention to whether the actual speed is consistent with the set speed, etc.

(2) Once an alarm occurs in the infusion pump, you should find the cause and deal with it in time.

(3) The infusion set used for the continuous maintenance of the infusion of liquid medicine should be replaced every 24 hours to prevent infection.

(4) During use, pay attention to observe whether there is redness and swelling on the skin of the intravenous injection to prevent tissue damage caused by the extravasation of irritating liquid medicine.

(5) Observe whether the patient has systemic reactions such as chills and fever. If there is any such reaction, stop the infusion immediately and report to the doctor for treatment in time.
